Working Relationships

3.1 Explain the importance of teamwork when working on a film production

Teamwork and cooperation are major factors to what goes towards the effort of film production and the end result.

Teamwork skills are prominent throughout many of the stages of pre-production, production and post production, between the producer and the scriptwriter, the director, the cameraman, and the editors. Communication is critical to ensure that the main concepts and ideas of the film stay clear throughout all the processes, since many people are tasked with the job to create a film with the producer’s and director’s right intentions. The editor will need to be given clear instructions in order to produce the end result that the producer and director had in mind.

The director will need to communicate with the cameramen in order for the best result intended and the writers will need to be in contact with the producer before production can actually begin so that everything is thought out.

Through personal experiences within my team, it has taught me to never underestimate the value of teamwork and effective cooperation.

Towards the end of our pre-production in our last session together before the shoot, almost half of our team were not available that day due to unfortunate circumstances. The scriptwriter was one of them and although we did manage to work with what we had got, we all acknowledged that we could have met more often outside of these times, or even emailed within our group circle to be able to organise the shoot together, since half of us did not live nearby to each other.

On the upside, it did appear that we had a little more success at the beginning of our course with communication. the scriptwriter in our group would often send us update on the script’s progress, come to us for advice and feedback and we all gave our say on it, and resulted in an end product that we were all proud of.

3.2 Identify the qualities needed to work well with others

Communication is vital when working in a team. There is a certain balance of independent thought and producing ideas as a team, in order to make a creative effort for a film.

Within my own team, many of us showed clear communication and put our ideas forward confidently, such as our director who came up with one of the base ideas for our film.

Another quality that is crucial is to show consideration for others and their ideas, and not just dismiss everyone’s for your own, and also to make sure that every individual in your team has been incorporated into your film, making sure everyone plays a fair part.

3.3 Describe how you worked with others collaboratively on your film production

During the time that my team worked on film production I have noticed how collaborative we all are, me being the producer means that I need to be a representative for my team at times and my involvement in our work exists in every stage.

Using a group messenger proved useful for the times we couldn’t meet up person, due to all of us living in different areas, and during pre-production, at the time we were writing our scripts, I helped our scriptwriter with the formatting and decisions were made as a full team on our group chat.

I also helped in the editing process, offering ideas and on the filming day I helped the director to guide the set, due to him having to be an actor on set, this made sure that our team’s effort was put to good use on one of the most important days of our production.

  1. Hi Constance,
This is great, but I think you could strengthen your answer by using some practical examples of teamwork working well, and perhaps not so strongly, in your group project.
Could you please give an example of when your production team worked well together, and how you as a producer facilitated the relationships between your team? What can happen if there isn’t good teamwork when working on a collaborative project, such as a short film?
And lastly, can you think of any examples when teamwork could have been better when making your short film? Using examples to help demonstrate what you are saying will not only express that you understand the importance of teamwork, it will also allow you to reflect upon your own work and the way you would adapt yourself within a team to ensure better teamwork next time. No worries if you think teamwork was particularly strong in your group, just let me know how it was you reached decisions in a group 🙂

    Best,
    Nora
